What is Plastic Injection Molding?

Plastic Injection Molding Machine

Injection molding is a manufacturing process that uses a specially designed machine to create plastic parts. Imagine a giant injector that shoots melted plastic! That’s kind of how it works.

Here’s the basic idea:

  • The machine has two main parts:
    • clamping unit that holds a metal mold cavity in place.
    • An injection unit that melts and squirts the plastic.
  • The mold cavity is shaped exactly like the final plastic part you want to make.

Melted Plastic:

  • Tiny plastic pellets, called resin, are fed into the injection unit.
  • There, they are heated up until they become molten plastic.

Squirt and Cool!:

  • The molten plastic is pushed, or injected, under high pressure into the mold cavity, filling every detail.
  • Then, the plastic cools down and hardens into its final shape.

Eject it Out:

  • Once cooled, the clamping unit opens the mold.
  • Special pins called ejector pins push the newly formed plastic part out.

This process is great for making a lot of identical plastic parts, like toys, phone cases, or even car parts. It’s fast, wastes very little plastic, and keeps the cost per part low.

Bonus! Another way injection molding can be used is to make a small number of special plastic parts, like prototypes or replacement parts for machines.
